KINDERGARTEN NEWS
MAY 14TH - MAY 18TH
Our Last Full Week of Kindergarten!
READING: This week in reading we continue our in depth review of all letters and letter sounds. The focus of our reading lessons will be on segmenting and blending with ă, ĕ, ĭ, ŏ, and ŭ. The class will be reading mini books, doing fun activities, and will be writing CVC and CVCe words on our white boards. We will practice reading and writing our high frequency words.
The kindergarteners will review literacy skills learned up to this point (rhyming, counting words, review positional terms, and listening/counting syllables, compare and contrast, “main idea”, story structure, nouns, summarization, nouns/verbs, “picture walk”, “making predictions”, “cause and effect”, and making inferences.) By this time, your child should be able to identify Aa, Cc, Dd, Ii, Mm, Nn, Oo, Ss, Tt, Ff, Rr, Pp, Ll, Uu, Kk, Gg, Ee, Bb, Hh, Ww, Vv, Xx, Qq, Jj, Zz, and Yy as well as each corresponding sound.
MATH: This week in math we will work on length and measurement as well as place value. Although we continue to move on in the math series, we will review shapes, addition, subtraction, numbers, money, patterns, etc. Please continue reinforcing these concepts at home or in the car when you are traveling from place to place.
The fourth quarter number goal is for students to count, write, and identify numbers 0-100. Please practice this with your child at home!
WRITER'S WORKSHOP:We will continue with our Lucy Calkin's writing curriculum by using pictures and words to share our experiences. Children are encouraged to phonetically sound out words and form sentences. At this point, children should begin to sound out CVC words and appropriately print them on our handwriting lines. Most students are writing two or more sentences! Look for your child's writing binder to come home!

We have supported our sister school, St. Mary’s in Uganda for the last four school years. We have been able to provide a lunch to the 1300+ students who would normally go without a lunch for the entire school day and would like to continue this service. Help us to create a new sister school t-shirt. Your design needs to be displayed on the form and must contain a slogan or motto for this school year incorporating out Catholic identity. All designs are due to the office on/before May 11th. The winning design will be announced on May 17th with a special surprise going to the winner. Will it be lunch with Mr. Ridder and your friends, or, possibly even a gift card?!? The link to this page will be included in next week’s Principal Notes.
Please remember to check your child’s Daily Folder each night for important information and handouts.
Please take the time to check out our newly updated St. Pat's Discipline With Purpose website at www.stpatselkhorndwp.weebly.com On this website you will find an overview of DWP as well as activities for you to use to practice each of the 15 self-discipline skills at home. Be sure to check out the Parent Resources section of the website as well!
If your child is absent or running late, please make sure to email Kathy Moritz, Deanna Timmerman, and your child's classroom teacher. All three people must be notified of your child's absence or tardy.

Continue to practice high frequency words with your child each night. We are continually adding new words to your child's word ring. Remember, word rings need to come back to school each day!
If you have a question or concern regarding your child, please send your teacher a short email and let us know what you would like to discuss. We will set up a time to chat in person or over the phone.
Thank you!
